TuxFamily.org newsletter ------------------------ #1: August 2010. --------------- 0. New features --------------- Two new important features were added to VHFFS, the software TuxFamily runs on: cron jobs and Mercurial. The cron service (named after the famous Unix program) allows you to schedule a script to run periodically on TuxFamily's platform. It's very useful to update your semi-static webpages or to send your automated newsletter. Just upload your script (shell, perl, PHP, ruby...) using SSH, create a "cron job" in the panel and it's up ! Please use this service with caution: do not schedule resource-consuming scripts that will overload our servers. Keep in mind that your script runs with minimum priority (nice(1)) and that its execution time is limited to 1 hour. Support for Mercurial repositories has also been added to TuxFamily. You can create these repositories on the panel, like for svn/git/cvs. Your repositories can be accessed via SSH (using your usual identifiers) or anonymously (read only). A web interface is also available: http://hg.tuxfamily.org/ Support for bazaar should also be available soon. ---------------------- 1. Project of the term ---------------------- This term's project is neither new nor small. But it's a newcomer on TuxFamily. Please welcome Notepad++, a free (GPL) source code editor for Windows. Notepad++ is very light but very powerful: syntax hilighting for up to 50 languages, tabs, file comparison, autocompletion, macros... It's also widely used: it's been downloaded 26 millions times on SourceForge since 2003, where it also won the Community Choice Award for Best Developers Tool twice. Its latest release (5.7) has been downloaded more than 400,000 times on our servers since July 5th. It's also a committed project: Notepad++ redirects its donations to the humanitarian NGO ATD Fourth World. That's also why it has moved on to TuxFamily, following SourceForge's decision to comply with US laws and deny access to their site from five countries (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria). Notepad++ is by far TuxFamily's most visited project: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ receives, each day, about 2000 visits, 1 million hits, adding up to 4.7 GB of bandwidth! In July, Notepad++ downloads made up for 1.5 TB of bandwidth. ----------------------- 2. TuxFamily in numbers ----------------------- Here at TuxFamily, we host: * 2284 projects (+ 7% in the last 6 months) * 2845 users (+ 6%) * 1437 databases (+ 6%) * ... adding up to ~14,5 GB of data (+53%) * 1063 repositories (SVN, git, CVS - rapidly decreasing) -, mercurial) (+ 12%) * 474 mailing lists (+ 14%), with 9319 subscribers (+ 12%) * 334 domain names (+ 12%). And behind the scene: * 159 GB of data, downloads excluded (+ 15%) * ... including 34 GB of logs * 336 GB (+ 5%) of downloads, including: * 13 GB of images (+ 30%) * 86 GB of movies (+ 6%) * 48 GB of archives (.tar, .zip...) (+ 9%) * 79 GB of ISO images (+ 3%) * 15 GB of .deb/.rpm packages (=) * 54 GB of sound files The huge increase of databases size is mainly caused by a new project (Vikidia, see previous newsletter) and... by spammed websites. Cleaning up the spam on your blogs, forums, wikis... especially unused one is your responsability: please do it, it will free up space for other projects! ------------------------- 3. TuxFamily in real life ------------------------- If you happen to visit a free software event here in France, you will probably meet the TuxFamily.org team! We've been at Solutions Linux in March in Paris, and to the Libre Software Meeting (LSM) in Bordeaux in July. You can see a few pictures on http://downloads.tuxfamily.org/assocetf/photos/RMLL2010/ You'll be able to meet us at the free software village of the Fete de l'Humanite (September 10-11-12), in La Courneuve, near Paris. See you then ! -- If you don't want to receive news from TuxFamily any more, just login on https://panel.tuxfamily.org and check out "Receive mails from the newsletter" on your preferences.
